In Greek mythology, the Hesperides were the nymphs of evening and sunset. They tended a garden in a far corner of the world, where they guarded a tree that bore golden apples. The tree was guarded by a poisonous snake. The mythic plant is similar to the Tree of Knowledge in the Old Testament.
The design is a reelaboration of a red-figure painting from an Apulian pelike. The original is kept at Civic Museum of the Ursino Castle, Catania (Italy).
